This is a picture from todays lessons. It shows a sequens where we worked with "Theory of constraints". It means that the student first builds a productionprocess in the computerprogram Visual Compunents 3D create. I gave the students the input data to the machines and when they where ready with this I gave them the real problem.
How shall they rebuild the process to get 120% progress????? They got an amount of 1 000 000 SEK(simulated) money and now they had to buy machines, conveyers and other parts to solve the problem.
The students said that this was one of the most interesting lesson they have had this year.
From my view I can also say that we all had an interesting and funny day.
This lesson started 08:10 and we was ready 14:45.

  1. What a great lesson and I am sure your students really enjoyed this real world activity. We also have a lot of project based work in Australia and it seems to engage the students very much. Since it is based on problems in the real world and they have a budget to work with this seems to stimulate the thinking of the students. Do you use this teaching method often?

  2. Hi Ros!
I hope you have a good time downunder:-)
In this Industrial Engineering Program we have a lot of different subjects where the students have to work with real life issues. I think that it is a real important way to get the right skills for the world outside our school. Of course the most ordinarie methods is classroom teaching.

  3. Yes Gunter it is important to give our students real life experiences and tasks. We find this easier to do with our older students. Do you find this to be the case? What sort of methods do you usually use in the classroom teaching?

  4. Hi Ros !
    The methods are situational.

It is of course a difference between younger and older studentgroups. I think that I have to explain more easy for younger students because the do not have the same life experienses as the older students. In classes with students from other countries I have to lower the level a bit and we have to do a lot of repeats.

It depends on the target group. But the most ordinary methods I use as a new teacher are PowerPoint lectures, whiteboard, discussiongroups, practicequestions and movies.

  5. Gunter we use a lot of these teaching methods too. With the younger students they seem to be very motivated by U tube movies and other flashy technologies. We find powerpoint is very useful too but we have to be careful that the slides are well designed and not too crowded. I often put cartoons in my powerpoint slides to make a good point. Do you ever do this?

  6. Yes I do. I use own photos and clip art pictures.
It is important that the slides are "clean" and professional made.

  7. I agree with you. When teachers use the technology we should be showing our students the best we can do otherwise it just becomes boring and the students lose interest. do you find this?
